Payment methods
ACH, card, wallet, and RTP details, processing times, fees, per-payment limits, and the ACH return window.
Drypowder supports several payment methods through the Payments portal: ACH (bank transfer), credit or debit card, wallet, and RTP (real-time payments). Payments are processed through Moov. Customers can link a bank account through Plaid or manually with Moov using micro-deposit verification.
ACH (bank transfer)
ACH payments transfer funds directly from the customer's bank account to the dealer's bank account through the Automated Clearing House network.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| How it works | Customer links their bank account, then authorizes the ACH debit |
| Bank linking | First-time ACH payers link a bank account either through Plaid Link or manually with Moov using micro-deposit verification. Once linked, the account is saved for future payments. |
| Processing time | 1 to 3 business days from initiation to settlement |
| Fees | Flat per-transaction fee (lower than card fees) |
ACH returns
An ACH payment can be returned after settlement if the customer's bank rejects the transaction (insufficient funds, closed account, unauthorized). Returns typically surface within 2 to 5 business days after settlement.
Credit and debit card
Card payments are processed through standard card networks (Visa, Mastercard, and the rest) via Moov.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| How it works | Customer enters card details or selects a saved card |
| Processing time | Near-real-time authorization. Settlement typically same business day. |
| Fees | Percentage of transaction amount plus flat per-transaction fee. Rates vary by card type (debit is lower than credit). |
Fee preview
Before submitting a payment, customers see a payment preview that shows:
- Selected invoices, debits, and credits with amounts.
- Payment method.
- Calculated fees.
- Statement discount, if the customer is paying a full statement within the discount window.
- Total amount due (including fees and net of any discount).
Fee configuration (who pays, rate structure) is set at the dealer level during onboarding.
Statement payment
For dealers who run monthly statements in Spruce, the Payments portal organizes the customer's outstanding balance into Total Balance, Last Statement, and Since Last Statement tabs. From these views, the customer can pay the full statement balance in a single transaction.
When the customer pays the full statement balance by the discount date set in Spruce, the Drypowder payment preview shows the statement discount automatically, and the discount is included in the GL posting back to Spruce so the customer's balance closes out correctly. Statement payments use the same methods as any other payment.
How discounts are arranged
Two discount arrangements exist, and which one a customer gets is configured per account rather than chosen by the customer. The arrangement decides whether a partial payment earns anything, so it is the first thing to check when a customer asks why a discount did not apply.
| Per-invoice | Statement | |
|---|---|---|
| Discount belongs to | Each invoice | The statement as a whole |
| Partial payment | Earns the discount on the invoices paid | Earns nothing |
| Posts to Spruce as | Individual open items | One balance payment |
Under the statement arrangement, a discount is also given up when the customer's selection reaches past the statement, or when the credits they applied are worth more than the statement rows can absorb. Drypowder then prices the payment invoice by invoice instead, and the customer sees the per-invoice result in their preview.
These arrangements are set by ECI, not in dealer-facing settings. If a customer's discount behavior does not match what you expect, confirm which arrangement their account is on before troubleshooting further. Your customer success team can tell you.
A separate setting can suppress per-invoice discounts entirely for a dealer. A dealer on that setting shows no per-invoice discount on ingested invoices at all.
Payment limits
Each method type limits how much can go through in a single payment:
| Method | Limit per payment |
|---|---|
| ACH | $1,000,000 |
| Card | $250,000 |
| Wallet | No limit |
| RTP | No limit |
The limit belongs to the method type, not to your customer or their linked account. The Payments portal checks the total against these limits before your customer adds a payment method, so a customer paying more than $250,000 sees the card limit before entering card details. Drypowder checks the limit again when the payment is submitted.
Payment method availability
You set which payment sources your dealership accepts. Drypowder applies that setting in two places: the methods your customer sees, and the check that runs when they submit a payment.
A method you do not accept stays on your customer's list, greyed out and labeled as not accepted. Your customer cannot select it, and Drypowder does not choose it as their default, even when they have set it as their primary method.
Three cases to know:
- Wallet and RTP are always accepted. Neither is configurable.
- Prepaid cards, and cards whose funding type Moov cannot identify, are accepted if you accept either credit or debit cards.
- A method with no acceptance information is treated as accepted. The check at submission decides.
Set your accepted payment sources and fee settings in Drypowder admin settings.
